In this blog we take a look back at the 1994 CART Miller Genuine Draft 200 at the Milwaukee Mile on June 5, 1994.

The weekend prior to the Milwaukee Mile race was the Indianapolis 500 which was won by Al Unser Jr. in his Team Penske Ilmor powered Indy Car.

There are not too many racers that have won the Indy 500 and the Milwaukee Mile race the following weekend but Al Unser Jr. was one of them to win both in 1994!

This was the year that Michael Andretti came back to Indy Car with the Target Chip Ganassi Team after an unsuccessful year in Formula 1.

Notice also the photos of Rick Mears giving Casey Mears some advice in his Indy Lights car.

One of the best liveries ever of an Indy Car is Adrian Fernandez Tecate car seen here. It's just beautiful, as is Bobby Rahal's Miller Genuine Draft car.

The Miller Genuine Draft 200 actually became the Miller Genuine Draft 192 because rain ended the race on lap 192.

Raul Boesel was on the pole position but Al Unser Jr. dominated the race.

Finishing second to Al Unser Jr. was Emerson Fittipaldi and Paul Tracy making the top three cars, all Team Penske.

This past year has pretty much sucked around our house here with my right kidney being removed, an infection that had a tooth removed and my wife having surgery as well. We are ready for a much better and healthier 2024 for everyone.

Also, we have lost a lot of musicians and racing folks including Gil de Ferran on December 29th and NASCAR legend Cale Yarborough yesterday.

Gil de Ferran was an amazing racer who won the Indy 500 in 2003 and two Indy Car championships in 2000 and 2001.

He was born in France but moved with his parents to Brazil before he was one year old.

Then he started moving up the ladder to try for Formula 1 but he really focused on Indy Car and CART from 1995 to 2003.

Starting in 1995 with Jim Hall's racing team and then on to Derrick Walker's racing team in 1997 before getting with Team Penske from 1999 through 2003.

The fastest lap EVER in an Indy Car was done by Gil at California Speedway in 2000 qualifying at 241.428mph! That's crazy fast and probably will never be beaten.

Gil became a bit of a friend through the years as we talked at the Milwaukee Mile and Road America. I have a photo of him at the Milwaukee Mile with a thumbs up in the cockpit of his Penske Indy Car. He signed a large print for me and I gave him a copy.

He also had some history in my state of Wisconsin for a semester in high school. Before he went to school for that semester he had to milk the cows!!

I heard the very sad news that he passed away of cardiac arrest at an event at the Concours Club in Opa locha, Florida on December 29th in a car in pit lane. His son was also with him that day and it just broke my heart that Gil is gone at 56 years old.

Prayers for Gil and his family and all the racing community that knew him. I still can't believe that he is really gone...

Congratulations to Helio Castroneves, aka Spider Man, for his fourth Indy 500 victory!!

We call Helio Spider Man because after he wins a race, he gets out of his car and climbs the track fence! He cheers with the fans and goes wild. His crew even joins him! It's fun to see his excitement and amazing enthusiasm.

I've photographed and known Helio since his Indy Lights racing days.

In 1998, Helio was in the CART Indy Car series with Hogan Racing. He was a great qualifier but never got the win with them. One of the photos here shows him coming into pit lane after qualifying on the pole position and breaking the track record at the Milwaukee Mile in 1998! It is the photo with his fist in the air.

The year 2000 brought Helio to Team Penske. That seat was to go to racer Greg Moore but he unfortunately passed away in an accident during a race in California in 1999. Who knows how far Greg Moore could have gone, but I think Greg would have won multiple Indy 500's and championships. Sadly, Greg was gone, but now Helio was on his way to a great career with Team Penske.

Helio started in CART and has raced in the IRL and Indy Car for Team Penske.

The past few years Helio has been racing in the IMSA series for Team Penske in an Acura NSX. Last year at the Road America IMSA race ,in pouring rain like I have NEVER seen during a race, he won despite two red flags. It was an amazing victory!

While in IMSA racing, he would still do the Indy 500 for Team Penske. That is until this year when he raced the Indy 500 for Meyer Shank racing in the SiriusXM car. He won and climbed the fence at Indianapolis!!! Spider Man is back!!

Winning the Indy 500 four times has allowed Helio to join a very exclusive club of racers, Rick Mears, Al Unser and AJ Foyt.  He said that he is not done with his Indy Car career just yet!

It's Memorial Day as I write this blog and we should remember all of our fallen soldiers today and thank all the veterans for their service. Thank you Dad, Captain Zimmermann!

Yesterday, I sat in our nice air conditioned home and watched the Indy 500 and the F1 Grand Prix in Monaco. Tradition here is to take a break from chores and enjoy the races!

Well, Helio and a few other of my picks didn't win. Will Power won the race and congratulations to him.

In a continuation of my past couple of blogs, I'm focusing on May 24th and 25th of 1993. These were two testing days at the Milwaukee Mile for CART drivers.

Way back when in the old Indy car days, the guys would practice and test at the Milwaukee Mile in between the Indy 500 and the Milwaukee race that was traditionally the weekend after the Indy 500. Not anymore, but back then and for many years it was tradition to come up and test at Milwaukee. The guys couldn't practice at Indy and they were looking for something to do! You could say that they were a little itchy for some driving or practice!

Paul Tracy is pictured here with Rick Mears coaching him along with Teddy Mayer who both were Team Penske engineer wizards! Teddy Mayer worked at McLaren F1 with the legendary Bruce McLaren and many others.

The biggest thing I remember of this test session was Paul telling Rick Mears that "wait until Nigel Mansell gets here and feels the bump in turn one"! There used to be a big bump in turn one that caught everyone by surprise. The track has been repaved since then of course.

Paul Tracy was in his first full season of Indy cars in 1993 and was Rick Mears' replacement driver. He scored five victories and finished third in points. He also led the most laps, named most improved driver by his peers and won from pole position twice.
